Everyday in the United States approximately 3,600 young people between the ages of 12 and 17 years old smoke their first cigarette. Research indicates, the younger you are when you begin to smoke, the more likely you are to be an adult smoker. Roughly 90% of current adult smokers started smoking before or at the age 19.1
In 2007, 20% of American high school students reported they were cigarette users. In 2006, 6% of middle school students reported they regularly smoked cigarettes. Nationally in 2006, 13% of male high school students were smokeless tobacco users. In 2007, 4% of male middle school students were smokeless tobacco users.2
